CWYW 3: When I open Microsoft Word I get an error message, “The macro cannot be found or has been disabled because of your macro security settings”, and the EndNote Web tools do not work. How can I fix this?

Answer: If you get this error message when you click on the EndNote Web tools in Word, then most likely the EndNote Web Cite While You Write (CWYW) file is not loading properly when Word starts.

Word 2007: Go to the Office button and choose Word Options. Select Add-Ins from the list on the left. At the bottom of the page, next to "Manage:" set the Drop down to "Word Add-ins" and click Go.

Word X/2000/XP/2003/2004: Go to “Tools / Templates and Add-ins.”

You should see the EndNote Web files listed under “Global Templates and Add-ins”, and the files should be checked. The file(s) you should see here vary depending on what version of Word you are using:

Word 2000/XP/2003: EndNote Web Cwyw.dot
Word 2007: EndNote Web Cwyw.dotm

Mac versions of word have 2 files.

Word X:
EndNote Web Cwyw Commands.dot
EndNote Word X Commands

Word 2004:
EndNote Web Cwyw Commands.dot
EndNote Word 2004 Commands

If any of these files are unchecked, check them, and click OK. If Word returns a macro security warning, check the box for "always trust macros from this source" and then "Enable macros." Close Word, and then start Word again. The EndNote Web commands in the Tools menu should be functional. If you go back to "Tools / Templates and Add-ins", the file should appear and remain checked.

If you are still having problems with this after verifying the CWYW file is checked, you can try the following in Word 2000/XP or Word 2003:

  1. In Word, go to Tools menu, select Macro then choose the Security submenu. Click on the Trusted Sources tab. Verify that the check box for "Trust all add-ins and templates" is checked.
  2. In Word go to “Tools / Templates and Add-ins.” If you have any other third-party programs listed here, you may encounter this error if there is a compatibility issue. Check with the product manufacturer of that specfic program for instructions on removing or disabling their tools.
  3. If you are still having problems, it is possible that Anti-Virus software was running when EndNote Web was installed. Disable all Anti-Virus software and reinstall the EndNote Web Plug-in.
